Volunteer

Our Volunteers

Volunteers are vital to us at Child Cancer Foundation. In the majority of our volunteer roles you won’t have direct contact with children in treatment and their families, but you will help us achieve our purpose by offering your time, skills and valuable advice.

What sort of people volunteer?

Child Cancer Foundation volunteers are ordinary people who come from a wide range of backgrounds and age groups. Some are parents, relatives or friends of families who have experienced the childhood cancer journey; some are from businesses and the public.

What do Child Cancer Foundation volunteers do?

We have a wide range of volunteer roles:

Fundraising - Street Appeal Collectors and Collection Boxes

Our Street Appeal volunteers take to the streets each year to raise the essential funds needed to allow us to continue to support families.  Street collectors will spend a minimum of one two hour slot over appeal and must be 16 years or older (if not they must be accompanied by someone 18 years or older). This is a great volunteer role if you only have a few hours to spare.

Area Coordinators work with Business Development to coordinate groups of street appeal volunteers, ensuring volunteers are aware of what is happening, have the correct resources and have a contact point on the appeal days.  This role requires approximately 2 hours leading up to appeal and then the Friday and Saturday of appeal. The national street appeal is held in February. To be an Area Coordinator you will have a drivers licence and must be able to pass a Ministry of Justice criminal check and undertake a short interview.

A large number of business and organisations hold our collection boxes on their counters ready to receive public donations.  As a Collection Box volunteer you will pick boxes up once they are full and return them to our offices.

Time spent on this role is “as required”. You will need to have regular transport to get to businesses, a reference check and must be able to pass a Ministry of Justice criminal check.

SIBS Camp Volunteers

Our SIBS (Specially Important Brothers and Sisters) camps are very popular. SIBS Camp volunteers have a genuine interest in children and spend two days at each camp supporting siblings of kids with cancer through fun activities that grow resilience. This well trained team of volunteers support camps around New Zealand, which are held during school holidays.

To be a camp volunteer you will undertake an interview, a reference check and must be able to pass a Ministry of Justice criminal check.

Corporate Volunteers

Volunteer roles include administration support, or specialised projects using skills such as marketing, IT, business development, education or health.  These roles may be one off or ongoing support.  Our National Support Office is based in Auckland and we have Family Places located in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin. Tell us about your skills and talents and how you would like to support us.

If you would like to volunteer as a group please give us as much warning as possible.

Connect Group Volunteers

With the majority of Connect Group volunteers being parents the Connect Groups are responsible for holding local social events for families across 19 locations nationally. Occasionally we need the help of volunteers who have a passion for organising events and have some great networks.
