Thu-Lena’s volunteer story

For Thu-Lena Tran, volunteering is something of a calling

In June 2019 Thu-Lena Tran, Child Cancer’s Connect Group Lead in Hawke’s Bay won the Individual Volunteer of the Year award at the Hawke’s Bay Volunteer Excellence Awards. Thu-Lena is a member of a dedicated group of parents and supporters who regularly organise events for families in the area.

Says Thu-Lena: “I am so proud to represent Child Cancer Foundation and it has been a privilege to lead such an amazing group which works hard to hold great social events with families. Of course in an ideal world there wouldn’t be any need for our assistance as child cancer wouldn’t exist but the reality is that the need for the Foundation grows by the day and so we do our best to help in any way we can.

“I am passionate about helping the Foundation as it does so much good work for children and families across New Zealand. It was a real honour and surprise to win the award and it has inspired me to work even harder to carry out this role.”
